For the Love of Food

Even the first snow of the season dusting the peaks of Aberdeen couldn’t stop five courageous employees from Fulton and Company from venturing over to the North Shore to help Interior Community Service; instead, they adjusted to the circumstances!

On the morning of October 8th, Dawn and her team moved their Day of Caring for the Mount Paul Food Centre indoors as the Fulton crew were tasked with sorting canning jars and lids, cutting produce and organizing the upstairs storage room.

The Mount Paul Community Food Centre is a welcoming space where people come together to grow, cook, share and advocate for good food. Over the past two years Interior Community Services has transformed their new space into a bustling hive of programs and people: everything from a soup kitchen to a seniors gathering space to cooking program for vulnerable youth and community gardens gathers. The Mount Paul Community Food Centre is a partner site of Community Food Centres Canada, a national organization that’s driving the development of CFCs across the country.

The volunteers from Fulton and Company were willing participants and worked hard, but just as it does in the kitchens of homes everywhere, the laughter and story sharing among the group was the secret ingredient.

With nearly 700 volunteers putting in over 3450 volunteer hours in less than three years, a lot of work, learning, and connecting is getting done at United Way Days of Caring®.

The idea is simple: An organization has a project that has been sitting on the back-burner (ie. a new fence or a space in need of paint) and a local business gathers a team of eager volunteers ready to get the job done. But it’s not just about the project, it’s also about building a sense of caring through volunteerism and connecting people with different skills, knowledge, and backgrounds. It’s about team-building and having the chance to learn about the programs available in our community that United Way supports.
