With the end of the school just around the corner, this time of the year is exciting for most kids in our community as the excitement builds for summer vacations and time in the sun.
This isn’t true for all kids, however. Summers may mean they do not have access to in-school supports like breakfast and lunch programs – often the only or most nutritious food they access during the school week.
Weekends can be just as daunting. Coming home to an empty fridge they know won’t be filled can be devastating. “When will I get my next meal?” should never be a question a child has to ask.
Luckily, this burden has been taken away for 122 kids in Kamloops, and even more throughout the region, thanks to “Feeding the Future” – a partnership between United Way, Kamloops Food Bank and School District #73.
Through the summer, this initiative provides snacks and food for students in summer programs. One teacher said of last year’s support, “It was great to have. I had a number of kids from low income households who would not have had a snack otherwise.”
The support does not stop there. Each Friday during the school year at 7 am, a group of volunteers gathers at the Kamloops Food Bank to pack 122 backpacks for kids aged 6-12 from 8 different schools. That is 5,002 backpacks packed in 2018/2019 filling the tummies of 122 kids in our school district who will now become stronger, healthier, and more resilient than ever.
1 out of 6 kids go to school hungry, but this year, you
can help bring that number down by supporting the “Food for Kids Drive Thru Breakfast” at Cascades Casino on June 14th from 6:30 to 10 am. Grab a hot breakfast wrap to-go from Match Eatery, along with coffee and Timbits from Tim Horton’s and support a great cause. You can even pre-order 20 or more breakfasts and become the office favourite!
If you can’t join us on the 14th, you can still support a backpack and learn more at www.feedingthefuture.ca.
These kids will get to be kids because someone like you noticed; someone like you cared. Together, we are leveling the playing field for all kids in Kamloops. Together, we are feeding the future!
