March 1, 2016 (Kamloops) – The Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) of United Way of the Thompson Nicola Cariboo has joined forces with the Kamloops Women’s Resource Group Society to organize a series of events being hosted by the Kamloops Library (downtown) on International Women’s Day (March 8th). Free events are being offered throughout the day (10am to 7pm) in Celebration of Women & Community “There will be something for everyone,” says Joelle Samson, Head of Reference for the TNRD Library.
Countless studies have shown, that when women and girls thrive, so do communities, countries and the world as a whole. “Communities are only as strong as its’ most vulnerable members. The Women’s Leadership Council are women of diverse backgrounds coming together to support those vulnerable families, children and youth,” says Chantelle Stone, Chair of the WLC. “We may define success differently but we all want the same things – for our community, for our family, and for ourselves.” The community-inclusive event in Kamloops aims to recognize and celebrate the incredible contributions women make to our society.
In addition to some great family activities and presentations on health, nutrition, and youth homelessness, the event will feature it’s own spin on the Denmark-born concept of the Human Library. At this event, the books come in human form, and give participants a chance get past the ‘cover,’ the labels we often give people, reminding us that we each have a story…a story that isn’t always obvious from the outside. The Kamloops Human Library Open Forum will be held from 6-7pm, featuring a panel of women representing diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
All events are open to the general public and no pre-registration is required. (A detailed schedule is attached) Donations of items for ‘life starter cleaning baskets’ are being accepted for the YMCA Women’s Shelter.
