Creating Sustainable Futures: Social Enterprise Tour

As part of the Creating Sustainable Futures: Capacity Building for Non-Profits initiative United Way facilitated a tour of social enterprises in Vancouver for four local non-profit leaders and a representative from the City of Kamloops.

In two days they visited HAVE cafe, The Cleaning Solution, Save-on-Meats, Star Works and Aunt Leah’s and had the opportunity to meet staff, learn more about the inner workings of the organization and see the social enterprise in action.

“The idea of creating a social enterprise can be exciting, overwhelming at times and a little scary. Seeing the various enterprises in action and speaking with the individuals involved, allowed me to have a better understand of the concept. For me, attending this tour solidified our intentions and gave me more ideas for potential enterprises. Thank you to the United Way for arranging this tour.” – Wanda Carisse, Executive Director of the Chris Rose Therapy Centre.

“Touring existing enterprises has helped to put everything into context for me and has given me some ideas on how a social enterprise could not only help to sustain our agency in the long term but could help us enhance our existing programs and help our participants in the short term.” – Susan Wright, Executive Director of Family Tree Family Centre

“The social enterprise tour was extremely valuable on multiple fronts.  First, the organizations selected offered variety as they were all doing something different to support their organization.  Second, the opinions, successes, and limitations shared were varied enough that it provided a good cross-section of opinions around what works and what doesn’t.  Third, the group of us from Kamloops ended up developing more of a relationship and we became a little think tank of ideas that will hopefully lead to some successes locally for social entrepreneurial ventures.” – Jen Casorso, Social and Community Development Supervisor with the City of Kamloops.
