Labour Program
Labour and United Way share a common vision for a society of healthy, safe, prosperous and respectful communities. Both movements want communities with the capacity to provide a wide range of accessible, universal and high-quality social services to people where they live. Through our partnership, we are able to participate in effective, strategic and progressive social development in our communities.
The commitment to formalize the relationship with Labour has been realized with the recruiting of a Labour Coordinator in April 2008. A Memorandum of Agreement establishing terms of reference has been agreed to by the Kamloops and District Labour Council and the United Way Board of Directors.
The Union Counselling Program, which is the cornerstone of the Labour Program, started at Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) Winter School in January and will be further developed in coming years.
Union Counselling is a three-level program designed by the CLC and delivered by Labour staff. It teaches union members about social issues and gives them the tools to link union members in need with available community resources. The joint participation and funding of this Union Counsellor training reinforces the commitment by the United Way and the CLC to further advance their partnership.
The success of any partnership is based on the contributions of time, energy and efforts from many people. The support and commitment from the Board of Directors, the Campaign Cabinet, Labour Council, many Unions and employees (both unionized and non-unionized) must be gratefully acknowledged. They have all made a tremendous contribution to our last campaign. By participating, providing leadership in the workplace, volunteering on United Way committees and encouraging members and coworkers to increase their involvement, you all helped build a sharing community that cares for its most vulnerable citizens.
