Mentorship
United Way is committed to providing meaningful volunteer and paid opportunities to youth in the community. By working with United Way, these youth have the chance to learn about United Way and their community while giving back in a significant way.
For the past four years, United Way has taken part in Service Canada's Summer Jobs program for students. Each year the students gain professional experience in marketing, event planning, community development, communications, volunteer administration, and non-profit management. This program offers businesses the opportunity to hire a student for the summer at a reduced cost with funding from the Federal government. Students must be attending a secondary, post-secondary, vocational or technical school before and after the position, and must be between 15 and 30 years of age.
Claire Macleod is our Community Development Assistant for the summer thanks to this wonderful program. Read about Claire's experience so far:
"I was fortunate enough to be selected as the summer student Community Development Assistant during my final year of my undergraduate studies at Thompson Rivers University, in the town I grew up in. As a Bachelor of Business Administration student majoring in Human Resources and Marketing, I spent the last four years studying the theories of business practice and administration - focused on profitable business management, economics, principles of law and human behavior studies. What I didn't realize was that my experience at United Way would change my view fo the community I grew up in, as well as the capacity in which I could use the skills I have acquired through my education."
