People In Motion Helping their Neighbours

People In Motion Helping their Neighbours

Last week a group of fantastic volunteers from People in Motion came to help out their neighbour across the street at the Royal Social House. The volunteers made an amazing amount of progress; in only three hours they painted two bathrooms a beautiful bright blue and touched up the beige walls in the dining area.

The Royal Social House is a low barrier community centre run by the volunteer community group Jubilee Urban Movement and Partners (JUMP). JUMP also provides produce markets and urban community gardens and creates volunteer and community connection opportunities for people of all ages struggling economically, socially and nutritionally. Their goal is to assist people to stabilize their lives and meet the challenges of sustaining a healthy and community-based lifestyle.

People In Motion is a non-profit which has been “Creating A Better Tomorrow”  for people with disabilities  since 1989 by providing fitness, recreational, educational and social programs and  services.  Their mission is to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities by providing quality programs and services, promoting accessibility and inclusiveness, raising awareness, and advocating and fostering respect for all.

It’s amazing for a non-profit to offer their valuable time to help out other non-profits in their area. Thanks to their generosity we were able to strengthen a community and brighten a centre that is like a home to so many people.

With nearly 700 volunteers putting in over 3450 volunteer hours in less than three years, a lot of work, learning, and connecting is getting done at United Way Days of Caring® proudly presented by Home Hardware Kamloops.

The idea is simple. An organization has a project that has been sitting on the backburner like a new fence or a space painted, and a local business has a team of eager volunteers ready to get the job done. But it’s not just about the fence. It’s about building a sense of caring through volunteerism and connecting people with different skills, knowledge, and backgrounds. It’s about team-building and having the chance to learn about the programs available in our community that United Way supports.
