1 in 6 kids go to school hungry. This staggering statistic is why United Way is hosting the inaugural “Food for Kids Drive Thru Breakfast” at Cascades Casino this Friday, June 9th from 7-10 am.
We want every child to be able to meet their full potential, and we know that may not happen if their focus is on a rumbling stomach and when they will get their next meal.
United Way and Cascades Casino have teamed up on this unique event and encourage the community to drive through and pick up a “grab-and-go” breakfast and swag bag with amazing prizes for a minimum $10 cash or credit card donation. Donate ahead of time or skip the line by pre-ordering 20 or more breakfasts at www.feedingthefuture.ca.
“United Way is so excited to introduce this new event in Kamloops and join together with new partners to raise funds to make sure no child in our community goes hungry,” says Danalee Baker, United Way Executive Director.
The goal of this event is to fill the gaps in food programming for kids by TRIPLING the number of Starfish Backpacks – a weekend food program during the school year – and increase access to food over the summer for vulnerable kids in Kamloops.
“Without Cascades Casino’s sponsorship and our partners at Kamloops Food Bank and the Rotary Club of Kamloops, we wouldn’t be able to make feeding the future a reality,” says Baker.
In addition to the breakfast portion of the morning, United Way is also hosting Jail & Bail VI: Villains vs Heroes themed where local “villains” will be arrested to also raise funds in support of fighting childhood hunger.
Having the basics like breakfast shouldn’t be a privilege, and United Way looks to level the playing field for all kids in Kamloops by making sure each child is supported and has the opportunity to meet their full potential.
